Winter dog care tips

As the temperatures drop and frosty mornings become the norm, our canine companions may need a little extra care to stay warm and healthy during the winter months.

I've compiled some tips to help you keep your furry friend cosy and content.

1. Bundle up for walks

Just like us, dogs can feel the chill. Invest in a comfortable and warm dog jumper or jacket to protect them from the cold during walks. This is especially important for short-haired or smaller breeds.

2. Paw protection

Winter walks often mean encounters with icy pavements and roads treated with salt or chemicals. Consider protecting your dog's paws by using pet-friendly paw wax or by investing in doggy boots. After walks, ensure you wipe their paws to remove any ice or salt.

3. Hydration is key

Even in colder weather, dogs need to stay hydrated. Check their water bowl regularly to ensure they're drinking enough. Consider adding some water to their food if you're worried they're not drinking enough.

4. Dry and warm sleeping area

Create a warm and dry sleeping area for your dog. Make sure their bed is away from drafts and elevated off the cold floor. Provide extra blankets or a heated pet bed for added warmth.

5. Limit outdoor time in the cold

While many dogs enjoy playing in the snow, it's essential to limit their exposure in extreme cold weather. Shorten walks if needed, and pay attention to signs of discomfort such as shivering or lifting their paws.

6. Grooming matters

Regular grooming is crucial during winter. Trim the hair between their paw pads to prevent ice build-up and reduce the risk of slips. However, avoid shaving them down completely as their fur provides insulation.

7. Adjust diet accordingly

Outdoor activities and the effort to stay warm can burn more calories. Consult with your vet about adjusting your dog's diet to accommodate their energy needs during the winter months.

8. Stay visible

With shorter daylight hours, it's crucial to stay visible during walks. Consider using reflective gear on your dog's collar or leash, and opt for well-lit areas for your evening strolls.

9. Be aware of the signs of hypothermia

Know the signs of hypothermia in dogs, including shivering, lethargy and weakness. If you notice these signs, bring your dog indoors immediately and consult with your vet.

10. Schedule indoor playtime

When the weather is too harsh, schedule some indoor playtime. Engage in interactive games, use puzzle toys, or teach them new tricks to keep their minds stimulated and bodies active.

Winter can be a magical time for dogs, filled with exciting new scents and playful moments in the snow. By following these winter dog care tips, you'll ensure your furry friend stays warm, healthy and happy all season long.
